4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job & does it well, May 17, 2008

This is a step above the basic rice cooker. What I really like about this model is the pail that the rice cooks in is extremely easy to clean. Just soak it in water and everything falls out. Like all rice cookers, it is easy to use. I typically don't bother with the brown rice setting when cooking brown rice because it takes too long. I just cook all rice (brown & white) using the white rice setting, and it cooks fast and has good results. I haven't used the timer feature either, but I suppose that would be handy. It seems durable, too - we've used it 2-3 times a week for the last two years and it still works great.

This is the second Aroma ARX-930 rice cooker and steamer I have purchased. I liked mine so much that I bought one for my son. It holds a large enough quantity for a crowd, and the outside stays cool. It cooks rice perfectly - there are different buttons to push for white and brown rice, and both come out beautifully. I use a bit more water than they suggest, but I don't rinse the rice first (which they also suggest); my guess is that the rinsing would remove some of the starch from the rice and therefore the amount of water they suggest would be just right. The rice cooker has a lining that is extremely easy to wash. I am totally satisfied with this product.

I've used this cooker for the past 4 years and have never had a problem making any kind of rice with it; brown, white, basmati, long or short grained... it's all been perfect. This cooker takes the worry out of rice when preparing a large meal. Easy to use and easy to clean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Restaurant Quality Rice at Home, September 25, 2006

This review is from: Zojirushi NS-LAC05XA Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
My wife and I became busy recently and decided it was time to finally get a rice cooker to save some time in the kitchen. We bought a cheap old-school rice cooker and the rice would scorch, water would boil out of lid, and the rice was worse than cooking the rice on the stove top.

Then we decided to invest in a good rice cooker.

The Zojirushi NS-LAC05 is everything we hoped for and more. We wanted a rice cooker that would make great rice, that could handle smaller amounts of rice, that had a timer, and could handle a variety of different rices.

This rice cooker is a dream.
-It's attractive. We've already received compliments from guests.
-Its footprint is very reasonable for a small kitchen.
-With a thick, stick proof bowl the rice doesn't burn to any spot and clean up is simple.
-It easily makes rice for 2 adults (1.5 of the "cups" for us) but could handle 4 adults (3 "cups") with normal eating habits. Note: the cups aren't... Read more

This review is from: Zojirushi NS-LAC05XA Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I set the timer in the morning and the rice is ready when I come home from work. When I walk in the door, my apartment smells of cooked rice, -- which is surprisingly pleasant. The timer is a must especially for brown rice which takes one hour and 40 minutes to cook. If I come home late, the rice is still okay since it automatically goes into a keep warm mode when the cycle is completed. It has a "mixed rice" mode which actually means cooking chicken, fish and tofu with the rice (not tried it yet). The only con is that the direction are terrible. It must have been poorly translated from Japanese. I'm not subtracting a star for this issue because it's so simple to operate once you know what to do. The cooking bowl has water level gradations etched into the side-- there are several depending upon the setting (brown, white, etc.) You put the dry rice into the bowl using the supplied measuring and add water until the level reaches the line for the rice you are cooking (brown rice... 5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love This Rice Cooker!, January 4, 2007

This review is from: Zojirushi NS-LAC05XA Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
Received this Zojirushi 3-cup Micom as a self-holiday gift a week ago. Since then, I've made sushi rice, basmati, brown & wild medley, along with various types of dal (basmati and red/yellow lentils with curry) and mujadarah (basmati and green lentils with carmelized onions). I've also used the warming part of things to gently steam scallops on top of rice for a New Year's treat. Yum! Soon I'll try veggies and flavored broths.

I first put in too much water, since the directions didn't make it clear that the water measures on the cooking bowl include rice at the bottom. But after I got this right, the results were perfect each time. The rice is as good or better than from a restaurant (plus fresher), and much, much cheaper to make at home, particularly if you purchase rice by the pound. I'm working on my sushi technique, but it's already tasting good if looking funky. I do advise rinsing, rinsing, rinsing the rice before cooking. Soaking the grains doesn't really... Read more

Best Buy:Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker

List Price : $90.00 Price : $41.60
Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker

Product Description

Cuisinart Rice Cooker has a brushed stainless housing and embossed Cuisinart logo. Traditional Lever control with warm and cook settings

Amazon.com Review

Healthy cooking and sleek modern design meld in this rice cooker from Cuisinart. A smaller version of the eight-cup cooker, this one also features a handsome brushed stainless-steel exterior, a square shape with rounded corners, chrome-plated handles, and a glass lid with a stainless rim, chrome knob, and steam vent hole. Inside you'll find a high-quality stainless-steel steaming basket and a nonstick cooking bowl that produces 4 to 7 cups of rice. The cooker also steams vegetables and thin cuts of meat, creating a complete, fat-free meal with little effort. Besides various types of rice, the cooker cooks couscous, polenta, oatmeal, boiled eggs, shrimp, and much more. An included booklet presents gourmet recipes for such mouth-watering meals as Creamy Parmesan Risotto with Asparagus, and Teriyaki Steamed Chicken with Cranberry Wild Rice.

One lever is all that's required to flip the machine on. Two different colored LED lights illuminate, one during the cooking phase, and the other when the machine automatically switches to warm when cooking is done. Included with the machine are a textured plastic paddle for stirring and serving, and a plastic measuring cup calibrated specifically for rice. All the unit's removable parts are dishwasher-safe. The cooker measures 7-3/4 by 7-3/4 by 9 inches, and is covered by a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, February 13, 2006
This review is from: Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
It's easy to clean and sure looks great on your countertop!

Positive feedback stops here.

I made a mess out of cooking rice (all the negative reviews are true) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity. After that, I spent 1 year using it nonstop (we eat rice every day).

365 days later, the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped, like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips. I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop (and sponge for cleaning) and never ever scratched it, so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame.

Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic*, this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi. They're not as elegants, but they last forever.

This review is from: Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
This rice cooker is a great addition to any kitchen. I love the steamer basket addition which allows me to cook additional food items at the same time as my rice. The steamer basket is great for hard and soft boiled eggs. When using this cooker, make sure that you go by the directions on the rice itself, not by the instructions in the manual (rice to water ratio). Also, the rice does have a tendency to boil over. I usually put a little butter in with the rice to prevent this from happening. I'm very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The instructions are wrong, January 25, 2008

After purchasing this unit, I too had spill over at very low water rice levels. I realized that this is the same problem one would get, using even medium heat to cook grits, or rice in a regular pot.......

(If you leave the top of the pot down tight.)

There is no way, because of the high heat setting of this unit, that the glass lid supplied can be used to completely cover the cooking pot, even though the instruction book indicates so.. The hole would have to be much larger to allow steam to escape.

The temperature setting of the heating dictates the designer set it high to allow the use of the steaming attachment, using a high boiling point

The steam will push the oxygen mols from the pot causing a very low barometric air pressure.

With this the bubbles generated by the boiling rice water will have almost no air pressure to keep them low or at minimum.{ they expand greaty), Thus foaming out the sides of the pot.

Even... Read more
